Ellenwood and Rex are just south of Atlanta, just east of I-675.  Drive 13 miles south from Little Five Points and hang a left at Exit 5. To most folks they are just names on the map; names we hear on the news once in a while, home of a victim or criminal. Are they just "...sparse suburbs nearly ruined by the crash?" (per Jeff Speck)

We architecture tourists take the long way to home to find out. We are such romantics.

This Ellenwood oldie has double gables, double chimneys and a Queen Ann'ish roof. There's one like this in Kirkwood and all over the south.

It has outbuildings too with a glorious gravel driveway

Rex has The Rock Baptist Church on Highway 42. It's a familiar Wren-Gibbs church with a fine steeple.

But there's an old one too next to the cemetery.

It's a modest Wren-Gibbs church.

I'm fine with the budget siding.

Rex also has Rex Mill but that's for another day. Let's head back to Ellenwood.

This is downtown Ellenwood, where Bouldercrest crosses the tracks and where Panola Road becomes Forest Parkway.

It's wonderful to encounter a little vernacular in the midst of the subdivisions.

This one is in fine shape.

Look at the huge stump.

Doesn't this look original?

This one looks almost new.

Huge birches.

I think I found downtown. This looks like a house that became a store.

Interesting on this side.

Is that a skylight or a roof repair?

Finally, a commercial building complete with a decorative parapet.

Beauty in brick and block.

Here's one more.

It's at the corner of Stagecoach and Rex Roads.
