"Regrets Go Only One Way" - "Creomulsion Building" Demolished

Everything about this irritates me and I want to blame somebody. But though I'm a pretty good whiner - real good some say - I'm an inept blamer.<br /><br />I wouldn't know who to blame anyway. because I don't think this is anyone's preferred outcome.<br /><br />And if that's so, we're doing this wrong. Even Drew, the master who operated the excavator, told me he can't believe the buildings "we" tear down.<br /><br />Here are some one-way regrets, pictures, videos, and a map. Elegant brickwork in broad pilasters, tall metal windows embraced by sturdy sills kissing  the beefy architrave, the sills align with bands that take the eye around the corners. Prominent and Challenging Corner Tear-down is Complete and I Like It

They say that challenges and constraints motivate designers - in this case <a href="http://harrisondesign.com/">Harrison Design</a>. Does that make it harder or easier? "I think maybe it's both." - Forrest Gump<br /><br />It was a high bar. It's a across the street from an <a href="http://buckcrook.info/index.html">Ivey And Crook</a>, a block from two more "Crooks" and a long block to <a href="http://architecturetourist.blogspot.com/p/philip-trammell-shutze.html">Philip Shutze's</a> Dwoskin House.<br /><br />It's a difficult elevated corner, book-end'ed with a fine diagonally sited Italianate on the other corner. This is how the architect solved the problem.<br /><br />It eventually disappeared into the setting. Last Look at the Little Split-Level Landmark on North Druid Hills at Goodwin

Looks like they are tearing down the whole block on the edge of Pine Hills near Cross Keys High School. I don't care much except for this one. It was different, it seemed to belong there, and it always caught my eye on my thousand drive-bys. My Two Favorite Small'ish Houses are by Pak Heydt and by Adam Stillman

I noticed the feelings not the things. <br /><br />All I can tell you is that I felt great in these places. I saw both on home tours, lucky me. The design effort is in the proportions, practicality, light, and flow rather than elaborate detailing, finishes, and fixtures.<br /><br />I've seen at least 150 houses in the last year, probably more. I remember these two above all one in Virginia-Highland one in Inman Park. They illustrate the high value of design and the good fortune of starting from scratch. They aren't so big. They compliment their neighbors. They seem as if they've been there all along.<br /><br />In these neighborhoods there are three ways to go.<br /><br />If you renovate your 80-year-old house, you usually end up with the 80-year-old flow. That can be charming or not.<br /><br />If you build a maxi, traditionally styled spec house, it's "if you've seen one you've seen them all." They are market-safe with shock and awe details. These can be fine houses or not.<br /><br />Then there are the modernist tear-downs. They specialize in awesome spaces, infinite vistas, and light. Most become landmarks of  "difference" which can be good or not.<br /><br />I present these two as the fourth way. They compliment the street and live modern. Marketing-wise I think these would sell before the sign went up.
